Nation’s Giant Hamburgers, or simply Nation’s, is a privately held El Cerrito, California-based fast food diner chain.

The chain, founded in 1952, largely operates in the San Francisco Bay Area.[2] The majority (87.5%) of locations are focused in the suburban Greater East Bay; consisting of Alameda, Contra Costa, and Solano counties.”

Nation’s has extended beyond the San Francisco Bay area all the way to the Sacramento area and Modesto. Damn. When I last lived in Modesto, California Nation’s had not reached that fast-growing city yet. Oh well. It could have been far worse. There was the famous Fast Eddie’s MOAB to supply my burger and fish & chip needs. If a Nation’s was available I would have visited both food firms equally.

In the latter portion of the 1980s and early 1990s Nation’s Giant Hamburgers provided the most bang for the buck when a burger or breakfast was desired. As I followed the jobs around a Nation’s was always within driving distance. Their breakfasts were more than awesome. The food was well-prepared and tasty as could be with the portions more than ample even for a hefty, hearty eater such as I. Normal folks would order a big breakfast with enough left over for another full meal thus the doggy-bag was the norm for those folks. Eaters such as I who faced a full-day’s work performing hard physical labor, that big breakfast provided the nutrients needed to toil as white-collar and office workers could only have nightmares about. Mighty yummy breakfasts at Nations with the portions to make a fellow happy as can be.

Nation’s hamburgers were a legend among burger eaters. The closest in size was a Burger King DoubleWhopper that was much larger back then compared to the small things they have become today as inflation over the years sent prices ever-upwards while patty and bun size steadily decreased. I expect that Nation’s burgers have also decreased in size over time but of the proportions remain consistent the Nation’s burger will have remained larger than the competition’s offerings.

The Nation’s hamburgers and cheeseburgers of the period I ate them regularly were so large that I typically did not order french fries to accompany the beast since eating both made me feel too full. Imagine that!!! Me, the mighty eater of fame actually not ordering a beloved munchie such as fries due to but one burger filling me THAT full. There was one work-around and that was ordering the junior burger and a large fries order with both together sating my eating lust.

Alas, as with the Mighty Moab Meal in Modesto, California my becoming a refugee in my own country had me leaving two fine dining experiences behind not to be replicated by anything I could find within mid-America.
