An Ode to the Criminally Underrated Taco Bell Potatoes

(no chick peas in Taco Bell food, that I know of, but they are great in salads)

“The potatoes are the most versatile item on the Taco Bell menu — hefty enough to be a substantial base, but not so obtrusive that they overwhelm the Quesarito or Crunchwrap Supreme”

An amazing essay regarding how the mighty potato is used in the creation of edibles at Taco Bell.  The eating public can maximize their food dollars’ buying power at Taco Bell.  For us decrepit old farts the senior discount is a plus.

Taco Bell’s Secret Weapon Has Always Been the Humble Potato

My typical Taco Bell order is two Spicy Potato Soft Tacos and a Seven-layer burrito.

The taco has little potato cubes within to add texture. The spicy sauce covers any potato taste but the taters do make the critter more substantial and akin to adding little chunks of meat. The lower cost of spuds helps keep the cost down and keeping a chewiness factor present. For the folks following the vegetarian trend the Spicy Potato Soft Taco is meat-free, as is the delightful, delectable devourable Seven-layer burrito.

The Taco Bell Wiki tells us:

“The 7-Layer Burrito is a large, meatless burrito filled with fresh onions, tomatoes, re-fried beans, Mexican rice, sour cream, guacamole, and lettuce in a flour tortilla. The burrito was introduced to Taco Bell customers in the United States in 1993 for vegetarian customers”

I enjoy eating meat but as with many things too much may not be in your best health interests. There is also the cost consideration. Meat is expensive for some folks. If you are a multi-billionaire like that power-hungry Bloomberg bloke buying hordes of TV ads trying to indoctrinate We, the People the cost of comestibles is nothing. For blue-collar laboring folks doing the actual work that keeps the USA operating at a daily basis, the people fed and housed, the roads in good repair and all the other required tasks food cost can be critical. And Taco Bell is, for me, an affordable some-times treat that allows me to escape eating the bland, boring stuff I prepare in my shack’s kitchen.

So… hooray for Taco Bell and the Mighty Potato!!!

For the effort required to create your own at-home potato soft taco the $1.29 cost each at Taco Bell is a small price indeed. However… perhaps if you have a party with a horde of folks arriving making your own may be worthwhile. Or maybe you are bored and need something to do. It is a plus that no deep-fat frying is required. Anything  made in boiling oil is fattening and there is a horde of medical reports about the unhealthiness of food prepared that way but I ignore those warnings. However, my body has, especially with advancing age, told me to minimize my input of food boiled in oil. I listen. Haven’t stopped, though. I have noticed that cutting way back on the cooked-in-oil food has made them taste even better when I do gulp them down.

This is incredible!!! I never thought of customizing my 7-layer burrito. It tastes fine to me as it arrives. However, maybe your liver will quiver with delight when you gulp down the burrito you personally crafted to your own desires. I assume that all Taco Bell outlets allow this customization as presented at their Web site. Check out the drop-down menus that require clicking on the down-arrow to make visible. These are at “add-ons” “sauces” and “styles.”:

Customize Your 7-layer Burrito

Before I go here is a recipe to make your own 7-layer burrito but it sure seems like a lot of work. Maybe if canned Spanish-style rice would work the effort would be more palatable for me.
